Franciscan Ceramics is a brand of pottery from Gladding McBean & Co., (1875- today).  Gladding McBean has a very extensive history, we will concentrate on the Franciscan line and provide you a brief insight into this very popular ceramic.  In 1932 Gladding McBean made a line of experimental dinnerware in solid colors.  In 1934, they first used the brand name: “Franciscan Pottery”.  The company name was changed to Franciscan Ware in 1936.  They were the first company to sell a dinnerware “Starter Set,” all packaged together in one box.  This pattern, “Desert Rose” was introduced in 1941, it was the second hand-painted embossed dinnerware developed by the company, ("Apple", being the first one introduced in 1940).  These two patterns remained the company's best sellers and they are known as "the most popular patterns ever made in America."  Later Interpace owned the line from 1962-1979 and Wedgwood from 1979-1984. Originally made in California, Wedgwood moved the Franciscan pottery production to England in 1983. Patterns Desert Rose, Apple, and Fresh Fruit were moved to the Johnson Brothers division of Wedgwood in England and all other dinnerware lines were discontinued.  In 1984, Wedgwood closed the Franciscan Ceramics division. In 1986, Waterford Glass Group purchased Wedgwood, which included the Franciscan brand, only the Desert Rose and Apple patterns survived, they had been made in China since 2004.  However, in 2011 Apple was discontinued and in 2013 Desert Rose was discontinued.  In 2015 all Johnson Brothers and Franciscan products were discontinued.  The Lincoln, California plant of Gladding McBean continues to produce architectural terra cotta, roofing tiles, and sewer tiles.
